Liffey Archipelago (2012)

Hack the City - Interstitial Insertions Workshop
Science Gallery, Trinity College, Dublin

In August 2012, I participated in a 5-day Hack The City Event workshop at the Science Gallery, Trinity College, Dublin. This event titled Interstitial Insertions aimed to develop proposals to rejuvenate unused spaces in Dublin through site analysis, drawings, photographic studies and models. Research into the use of oil rig escape pods as hotel rooms in Amsterdam sparked my idea titled Liffey Archipelago.

The Liffey Archipelago proposes an escape to experience new modes of being away from the cacophony of city living. Referencing Joyce’s novel Ulysses (itself a hack of Homer’s Odyssey) and Ireland’s offshore islands (Skellig Michael, Fastnet and Dursey), this insertion offers a sensory experience based on human need. The islands, accessed via floating pods, cable cars and zip-lines lure the participant away from the daily grind of city living affording them an opportunity to view the city from a different perspective.

Liffey Bridge Drawings (2012)

Automatic Drawings (2012)
This self-directed college project was based around 16 bridges on the river Liffey in Dublin. Recording the mid-point location on each bridge using a GPS, I produced 16 automatic drawings (using a 2 handed drawing technique). The idea was to reconnect with the city as an artist.
